A Flight within the US: New York-Miami with American Airlines

My flight to Miami from New York with American Airlines took place in April 2011.

This is the plane used for the flight, a Boeing-757-200 (photo courtesy of Darren Wilson, found via Airliners.net):

The New York-Miami flight has two classes – economy and business. Economy class with American Airlines is no different from flying with low-cost carriers: the tickets were cheap, but the flight offered minimal service; there was no luggage allowance, and no meals.

In LaGuardia Airport, passenger flights of American Airlines and feeder airlines operating under the name American Airlines Eagle all dock at the same terminal.

The company encourages passengers to check in at self check-in machines. The stands are meant only for checking luggage.

A distinctive trait of flying within the US: you have to pay for every piece of checked luggage separately. The fee for the first suitcase is $25, the second costs another $35.

There are no additional fees for carry-on luggage as long as it’s within the size limits. Most passengers brought all their luggage as carry-on, using bags just under the size limit, which unfortunately meant that all the room in the overhead compartments quickly filled up. If you’re one of the last people onboard, you run the risk of having nowhere to stow your carry-on.

The interior of the Boeing-757-200 has a pretty worn appearance, indicating its long service life. The finish is typical for the 1990s, with blue cloth upholstery and whitish-gray paneling that’s beginning to yellow.

There are several TV screens located over the aisles that play movies during the flight. To listen in, you can purchase earphones for $2.

There is no food served during the flight (though it’s 3 hours long). Only refreshments.

On the up side, the restrooms were very clean.

All of American Airlines’ Boeing-757s are equipped with winglets.

Conclusion: an intra-country flight in the US with American Airlines is a lot like a long road trip by bus. The basic prices of the tickets are low, but every additional service is provided for an extra cost. The planes do follow their schedules pretty closely.
